The first failure is the interface. A modern combi supports OpenTherm or eBUS load compensation — modulating the flame down as the room approaches temperature instead of cycling on and off. Fit the smart stat as a simple ON/OFF replacement and you lose 8–12% of the savings the boiler was designed to deliver.
The second is zoning. A whole-house single-zone smart stat still heats every room to the same schedule. Splitting the property into upstairs/downstairs zones — or per-room with smart TRV heads — is where the real bill reduction lives. Skipping it means paying to heat empty bedrooms in the evenings and empty living rooms overnight.
The third is commissioning. Nobody in the house pairs the app, configures the schedule, or turns on geofencing. Which smart thermostat do you recommend?
The best fit depends on your boiler, your Wi-Fi setup and whether you want single-zone or per-room control. On a modern Vaillant, native vSMART is usually best. On a Worcester or Ideal supporting OpenTherm, Drayton Wiser or tado° are strong choices. For per-room zoning, Honeywell Evohome or tado° smart TRVs.
Will a smart thermostat actually save me money?
Fitted correctly on a modulating boiler with sensible zoning and app commissioning, 10–20% gas bill reduction is realistic. Fitted badly, the savings evaporate — the install detail matters.
How much does a smart thermostat install cost?
Typically 2–3 hours at £90/hr for a straightforward single-zone install on an existing wired programmer position, plus the device. Multi-zone and smart TRV installs are priced per job in writing.
Can I install a Nest or Hive myself?
Physically yes — but if your boiler supports OpenTherm or eBUS and you wire it as ON/OFF you lose the biggest chunk of the savings. Boiler manufacturer warranties also increasingly require competent-person installation on any boiler-connected control.
Do you install smart TRV heads on every radiator?
Yes — where per-room zoning is wanted. tado°, Honeywell HR92 and Drayton iTRV heads are all fitted and paired to the parent controller during the install.
Do you handle multi-zone plumbing (S-plan / Y-plan)?
Yes — 2-port and 3-port motorised zone valves supplied, installed, wired and commissioned. Correct hydraulic separation on the manifold to prevent boiler short-cycling.
Can you make my current system landlord-controllable?
Yes — remote schedule and hold, with tenant lockout on adjustment ranges, is a common brief for landlord installs. Hive and tado° are the usual choices.
What guarantee do I get?
